We all know that the world is having a tough time right now, unemployment rising almost daily, and there are a lot of people out there who are really struggling. But history shows us that leisure and entertainment usually prosper, even grow, in these hard times. Look at the great depression of the 20's & 30's, it was the Gin Houses and Speak Easy's that made some people very rich, against all plausible reason. A recession has a 'sideways' effect too, venues, restaurants, pubs, clubs etc will be looking to keep hold of or increase their income at this time and that often means adding some attractions to their marketing ... possibly in the form of live entertainment.

What does happen though is that a recession will clean out the system, part time or amatuer promoters tend to be less active, or disappear altogether and the professional promoters (along with the general public) become much more discerning about where they'll spend their money.  This is a time that you should take a long and honest look at your show and be ready to make sure you are able to give outstanding value for money.
